Meet Betsy!
The Mindful Manatees adopted the newest member to our school family. Betsy is a rescued manatee living in Homosassa Springs State Park. According to the website: "Betsy is very friendly and curious and is quick to investigate anything new. In 2017 she returned from Ohio’s Cincinnati Zoo, where she served as a companion for manatees in rehabilitation." The Mindful Manatees voted on Besty because they were touched by her profile. Welcome Besty!

Greetings!
Safekeepers are working hard to prepare and create content for Distance Learning Phase 2. Next week will be exciting for all of us as we share with you and work out the kinks of Distance Learning. Thank you for staying flexible with us as we navigate through the ever evolving technology and changes. I have never used/relied on technology so much as I have the past few weeks. Speaking of technology, I plan to have a Zoom connection time with Scholars! I will email an invitation to join. There is no need to sign up for Zoom. You will just need to use the link and password that I send.
Zoom Connection
When: Wednesday April 8th
Time: 1pm
An email invitation will be sent separately.
Make sure you are checking out the 4/5 Distance Learning Padlet (https://padlet.com/poirierb/nxz0kv13ud) for resources and activities for your scholar this week.

Greetings!
Thank you for your continued patience as we navigate Distance Learning Phase 1. As you may know, we will be planning to enter Phase 2 and teachers are working collaboratively to create a smooth, streamlined plan to implement at home when Phase 2 begins.
AGAs are being mailed electronically. We are working out the kinks and hope to have them emailed to you by the end of the day. If it needs to be postponed to tomorrow, we thank you for your flexibility.
We need YOUR input! Would you and your Scholar be interested in recording a small clip 1x or 2x per week? It could be wish well, sharing something uplifting/funny or academic related. It could be sharing a book he/she is reading, art, experiments, dancing or writing. I’d like to start collecting clips to share. Please email me clips as you record them.

Greetings!
What a past week it has been for our community! I know there are feelings of uncertainty and anxiousness. For me, I make lists, journal, work in the yard, read, have living room dance parties, paint and craft. I look for silver linings and try to see the positive in situations. I hope Scholars are also finding constructive ways to express their uncertainty. I'd love to hear about it! Please email/record updates about your Scholar. I truly miss them!

Please check back for video updates later this week.
Above, you will find a Padlet that I have created for the Mindful Manatee School Family. Check back often to see added materials.
Academics: The 4/5 team is working to create helpful resources, websites and instruction. It will be finalized this week and sent on Monday, March 30. Third quarter AGAs will be sent home close to the predetermined date. Once a confirmed date is available, I will communicate to families.
Quotes to ponder from Mister Fred Rogers:
"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers--so many caring people in this world."

Greetings!
BLUE FOLDERS WILL BE SENT HOME THURSDAY WITH SPRING BREAK PACKETS.
ELA/Theme: We continue to embed our Native American and Florida History themes into Reading and Writing this semester. Scholars are developing groups to focus on specific tribes and regions in Florida and the United States. Upon return from Spring Break, students will do an intensive week of writing to prepare for the Writing FSA on April 1st. Scholars have done a tremendous job on their effort this semester with writing. We are proud of the results and hope to see that reflected in April. Below, you will find helpful links of writing samples with scores as well as rubrics.

ELA/Theme: The writing FSA is just a few weeks away on April 1st. We will be doing intensive writing prep upon return from Spring Break. The Manatees have already shown a lot of growth in this area. Way to go, Manatees! Our ELA and Theme focus this 9 weeks is on Social Studies--specifically Florida History. If you are an expert in the field of Florida History and would like to be a guest lecturer, please contact Ms. Heather to set up a date.

Important Carnival Update:
Please note the SASC WINGS PTSO Spring Carnival has a date change.
Mark your Calendars to attend.
Our 5th Annual Spring Carnival
Friday, April 24.
**NOTE THE DATE CHANGE**
The Carnival Committee is meeting regularly to plan another incredible carnival for us.
They are currently seeking corporate sponsors to help cover the cost of the venue.
Know some college or high school students who need volunteer hours?
Know an organization who had volunteers who could help?
We are hoping for many outside volunteers to run the games and booths.
The more outside volunteers we have, the fewer parents we need!
If you know a company or organization who can help with either of these,
please contact Amy Serles, Committee Chair at [email protected]

TUESDAY FOLDERS WILL BE SENT HOME THURSDAY. SUPPLEMENTAL WORK WILL BE GIVEN IN MATH OVER HOLIDAY BREAK :)
So Many Reasons to Give
On Tuesday, December 3, the School of Arts and Sciences will kick off our year-end fundraising drive. This year, our goal is for 100% of SAS families to contribute in any way that they can. Every family choosing SAS has a reason why our community is special to them. We hope you will share your reason with us.
A parent of one of our SAS kindergarteners is choosing to invest in The School of Arts and Sciences because:
“I never imagined that in a city like Tallahassee, that my child could have the opportunity to attend a school that emphasizes social-emotional learning, building relationships, and leadership skills just as much as they emphasize academics. We see this approach to learning as an invaluable investment in our children and absolutely worth supporting.”
We hope you will join us on Giving Tuesday, December 3, by contributing and also asking your friends and family to invest in the SAS difference.
What is your reason?
With love,
SAS

Students are brainstorming a topic, outlining necessary speech elements and beginning to write. They are encouraged to take home speeches to work over Thanksgiving break. Additionally, students have been working on independent center reading rotations, writing a 5 paragraph essay about heroes and script writing and animating a trailer based on their favorite book or film.
