Last Friday, the 4/5 classes took a field trip to Natural Bridge, a Civil War reenactment. Scholars walked through the Confederate, Union and Settlers tents, and learned the way of life was lived in the 1860’s. The weather was perfect and the scholars had a blast! Here are some pictures of our adventure!
Field Day is this Friday, March 13th! We are in need of volunteers. If you are willing and able, please send an email to the front office. If you have not submitted permission through the Script app, please do so as soon as possible. You can also email Ms. Brittany to give permission. Field Day is free, but we must have permission for scholars to go off campus.
Conferences have begun. If you have not signed up, please do so with the link sent yesterday as soon as possible. If you would prefer a phone conference, put "phone conference" in the comment section on the sign-up. March conferences are mandatory.
Here is what happening in our class this week:
MATH -Artists
We will be reviewing Topics 1-12 tomorrow (Wednesday) and testing on Thursday. Topic 13 will begin after Spring Break.
MATH- Scientists
Scientists took their Topic 12 assessment today. We will be reviewing Topics 1-12 tomorrow (Wednesday) and testing on Thursday. Topic 13 will begin after Spring Break.
ELA/THEME
The writing FSA is just a few weeks away on April 1st. We will be doing focused writing prep upon return from Spring Break. The Llama have already shown a lot of growth in this area. Way to go, Llamas! Our ELA and Theme focus this 9 weeks is on Social Studies--specifically Florida History. If you are an expert in the field of Florida History and would like to be a guest lecturer, please contact Ms. Heather to set up a date.

Know an organization who had volunteers who could help?
We are hoping for many outside volunteers to run the games and booths.
The more outside volunteers we have, the fewer parents we need!
If you know a company or organization who can help with either of these,
please contact Amy Serles, Committee Chair at [email protected]

We finished Topic 1-8 assessment last week. For anyone who scored below a 70 (our school-wide goal), a blank Topic 1-8 was sent home with your scholar's assessment. It would be helpful for your scholar to review the ones they missed and be sure they understand why as we continue to move on with new information. Topic 9 is all about addition and subtraction of fractions. Topic 9 homework was sent home today, with the Topic 9 assessment practice. Topic 9 review will be next Tuesday, and the assessment will be given on Wednesday.

Happy Tuesday Llama families!
We hope you had a relaxing and safe three day weekend. We have been talking about the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr in our class and what qualities he possessed and how we might be similar or different from him. We will continue these conversations in the upcoming weeks.
Last week, our Llamas did a time lapse video in our classroom to show what a typical morning might look like in our classroom. It was so fun! We are hoping to do a full length one soon. If you missed it, check it out below:

Happy Tuesday Llama families!
We are back at it! When we came back last week, we began a new quarter- our 3rd quarter! Which means we are now halfway through our school year. It is so hard to believe! To celebrate the end of the second quarter, we sent home AGAs (Academic Growth Analysis) today to showcase our scholar's achievements. Reflect with your scholar on areas, both academically and socially/emotionally (reflected in the ESA-Executive Skills Analysis found on the back of the AGA) that need continued support and practice at home.
We have continued to connect after returning from our long break.
Here is a video of a couple of our scholars showing off one of our Brain Smart Start connections!

Happy New Year and welcome back!
We are so excited to be back together with our school family. We had a lot of fun hearing about everyone's break. Some of us stayed here and relaxed, some of us traveled by car, and some of us flew to far away places. We hope you all enjoyed a safe and restful break.
We spent the morning re-connecting with each other through a variety of activities. One of those was a Math Escape Room game. Here are some pictures of the fun:

Happy Tuesday!
With only eight school days left in 2019, our Llamas are participating in a Kindness Challenge. We have challenged our school family to commit ten acts of kindness each day. If every Llama did this, each day we would have over 200 kindness acts in one day and over 1000 kindness acts in a week! And that's just in one classroom. Imagine if that spilled over into our school and community! We encourage you to accept this challenge too!
Here's what's happening in our class this week:

The goal will be to take the Topic 7 assessment the last week (probably Monday or Tuesday) before the long winter break. A short project was sent home in Phoenix folders as well. As always, homework (and most projects) are optional. Remember, the "Plan a Vacation" project that was sent home before the break is not optional, but can also be done in class.
ELA
The primary goal for this week is finishing up and practicing speeches for the Tropicana Speech Contest. Students have been working hard and we cannot wait to hear them on Thursday during our class speech contest. So Many Reasons to Give
Today, Tuesday, December 3, the School of Arts and Sciences will kick off our year-end fundraising drive. This year, our goal is for 100% of SAS families to contribute in any way that they can. Every family choosing SAS has a reason why our community is special to them. We hope you will share your reason with us.
A parent of one of our SAS kindergarteners is choosing to invest in The School of Arts and Sciences because:
“I never imagined that in a city like Tallahassee, that my child could have the opportunity to attend a school that emphasizes social-emotional learning, building relationships, and leadership skills just as much as they emphasize academics. We see this approach to learning as an invaluable investment in our children and absolutely worth supporting.”
We hope you will join us on Giving Tuesday, December 3, by contributing and also asking your friends and family to invest in the SAS difference.
What is your reason?
With love,
SAS
Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Another Tuesday and we are almost in November!
Last week the Llamas hosted Friday Sing and what a blast we had! Here is a video if you were unable to make it:
This Friday is our Fall Festival. We will be having a full academic day on Thursday and also Friday morning. Scholars may wear costumes, but must be prepared to follow our typical academic day. If costumes are distracting or scholars are unable to stay focused, they may be asked to remove them until the Fall Festival. Every scholar should have a change of clothes in their backpack. No masks or weapons will be allowed. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Brittany.

What a week we have had! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our Open House last week. We are so excited about everything that will be happening in our classroom this year. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint was sent out yesterday to families. This week, we had a mystery reader! Ms. Brittany's childhood friend Ms. Alejandra came all the way from California to read to our class. Llamas must be pretty special!

Happy Tuesday!
We are so glad to be back with our Llama family after the long weekend. We hope everyone had a safe a restful few days off, whether you left town or stayed here. With Conscious Discipline, we spend the first six weeks of the school year building our school family and making connections. This last week we have continued to do that through partner activities, games, and group activities. One of our favorites this week was called "Can you save Fred?" and all of our Llamas had a blast working together to try to save Fred and his boat that had tipped over. Here are a few pictures from the fun!

Welcome Llama families to the 2019-2020 school year!
We are so excited to get this year started. Our Loving Llamas have had an amazing first two days. We learned about being a safekeeper at school and becoming part of a helpful school family. This week we are focusing on getting to know our school family, conscious breathing to calm big feelings, and most importantly, safety. We say "we are your safekeepers and it is our number one job to keep you safe" and "as students it is your number one job to help keep it that way." We are learning all about commitments, wishing well, classroom routines/procedures, and one another. It has been a beautiful two days! To learn more about our practice of Conscious Discipline visit the website at consciousdiscipline.com. We are so excited to have your scholar as part of our llama family this year. We have so many exciting things planned for this year and are so happy to start this year's adventure.
